Redondo Beach Students Win National Merit Scholarships

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Two Redondo Beach students have been chosen to receive 2020 college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. The recipients are:

  • Paige Elliott, Chadwick School: Publishing, Vanderbilt University

  • Vanessa Rebentisch, Redondo Union High School: Environmental Engineering, Texas A&M

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced on Tuesday the names of over 3,300 winners of scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Each award will provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

More scholarship winners will be announced next month, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2020 competition to about 4,100.

The 92 private and 75 public colleges and universities are spread out over 43 states and the District of Columbia.

This is the third round of scholarship winners announced this year. Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and National Merit $2500 Scholarships were awarded in the spring. When the final scholarship is announced, about 7,600 high school seniors will have received over $30 million.
