Redwood wins Central Section Division II boys wrestling team championship

On Friday night, Redwood placed first as a team to win the 2023 Central Section Division II title at Golden Valley High School in Bakersfield.

The Rangers scored 246 points to finish first. South Bakersfield came in second with 203 points. Monache was third with 167 points.

Eli Valdez and Enrique Segura led Redwood. Valdez topped the competition at 162 pounds to win the Central Section Division II individual crown. Segura also captured a separate section championship, placing first at 197 pounds. Valdez and Segura went 4-0 en route to a section glory. Three of Valdez's wins came from significant decisions. Segura posted two pins in four victories.

Also, for Redwood, Isaak Mendoza (122 pounds) and Kai Preisendorf (222 pounds) put together second-place performances in their respective weight divisions. The Rangers are led by head coach Dave Watts.

Redwood will send 13 wrestlers to Friday's Central Section Masters tournament at Buchanan High School in Clovis:

  • Jordan Nguyen (287 pounds)

The state tournament will be held on Feb. 23-25 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
