Referee stops game because of rough play. Then she was beaten, Indiana officials say

An Ohio girls basketball coach is facing charges after she and her players were accused of attacking a referee during a basketball tournament in Indiana, officials told news outlets.

The game took place July 23 at Triton Junior-Senior High School in the town of Bourbon, but coach Laquita Carter was taken into custody on Aug. 14, WLWT reported. She is facing charges of felony criminal battery and felony criminal confinement, the outlet reported.

Carter coaches the Cincinnati Indians Elite, the station reported.

Referees stopped the game because of rough play, WRTV reported, citing court documents. The situation quickly turned violent and at least two officials were attacked, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told the station.

Carter is accused of pinning one referee’s arms from behind, leaving her defenseless while Carter’s 15-year-old son hit the referee in the face, according to court documents, WXIN reported. Carter and players chased the ref and, at one point, pulled a wig off her head, ripping hair from her scalp in the process, the documents read, according to WXIN.

The other referee was assaulted by players on both the girls and boys teams, and the attack is being investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the station reported.

As of Aug. 15, Carter was awaiting extradition to Indiana, WLWT reported.
