Refugio native Firova to receive lifetime achievement award

Refugio native Dan Firova, who has been with the Astros organization for the last two seasons, and part of this season's World Series championship team, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award next month at the 2023 South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet held by the Hooks.

Firova has been in professional baseball for 43 seasons, including the last two with the Astros, helping the team to two American League pennants and this year's World Series title as quality assurance coach.

Firova's career accolades include more than 1,300 wins across 20 seasons as a manager in the Mexican League, the most managerial wins by a non-native in the league.

The 1975 Refugio graduate played at Bee County Junior College and UT Pan American, and was drafted three times, lastly by the Mariners in 1980, playing 13 seasons and making it to the majors with Seattle and Cleveland.
