Regal Greece Ridge movie theater remains open, at least for now

Update, March 7, 2023: After getting a brief reprieve, the Regal Greece Ridge theater at The Mall at Greece Ridge will close for good following screenings Thursday, March 9.

An alert posted to the Regal Cinemas website reads: “Regal Greece Ridge is closing on March 9. You can still enjoy the best place to watch a movie at these nearby theatres: Regal Henrietta, Regal Eastview Mall.”

A spokesperson for mall owner Wilmorite said the company's leasing department is in negotiations with a new tenant for the Regal space.

Original story, Feb. 20, 2023: Feb. 15 has come and gone, but the 12-screen Regal Greece Ridge movie theater is still here, screening "Ant-Man," "Magic Mike's Last Dance" and "80 for Brady," among other features.

The theater at The Mall at Greece Ridge was on a list of locations targeted for closure as part of its parent company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding, according to paperwork filed Jan. 17 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

In those documents, U.K-based Cineworld Group stated that on Feb.15, it would end leases for 39 underperforming theaters nationwide, including Regal Greece Ridge, as part of a restructuring to save $22 million annually.

However, new paperwork shows that Regal Greece Ridge has been removed from the list, as have 29 other locations.

Asked for more information, mall owner Wilmorite said questions should be directed to Regal Entertainment Group. Calls and emails to the Knoxville, Tennessee-based company have not been returned.

Film distributors told IndieWire.com Feb. 15 wasn’t a “drop-dead date,” but a maneuver in response to the bankruptcy judge’s insistence that Cineworld move quickly in its bankruptcy case.

IndieWire also is reporting that the previously targeted theaters now being spared, including three others in New York state, still could close at a later date.

Last September, in response to its financial struggles, Regal shuttered 12 locations, mostly in the western United States.
