Regina King makes Venice film festival history with Muhammad Ali-focused film

Even with an Oscar, Golden Globe and three Emmy Awards to her credit, Regina King is still making history.

The former “227” star’s directorial debut, “One Night in Miami,” is the first film directed by an African-American woman to be selected in the Venice Film festival’s 88-year history.

At an event on Monday, King told reporters of the heavy weight the film bears for the future of Black film directors.

“It’s interesting because how this film performs will open doors or maybe close doors for more Black female directors … that’s how things seem to work,” she said.
