Region 10 tournament begins

Mar. 7—WILMINGTON — Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute is the top seed for the Region 10/Atlantic District basketball tournament, which begins Thursday at Cape Fear Community College.

The Cobras (22-4) receive a first-round bye and will hit the court at the Joe and Barbara Schwartz Center in Friday's semifinals. The opponent for the scheduled 2 p.m. tip-off is Thursday's winner between fourth seed Cape Fear (12-13) and fifth-seeded Gaston (17-11).

The host team and Gaston play in Thursday's quarterfinals at 2 p.m., with second seed Brunswick (18-12) and seventh-seeded Denmark Tech (12-16) playing at 4 and third seed Spartanburg Methodist (20-10) and sixth-seeded Richard Bland (12-17) meeting at 6.

Friday's other semifinal is at 4 between the Brunswick/Denmark and Spartanburg/Bland winners.

The championship is on Saturday at 1, with the tournament champion awarded a bid to the NJCAA Division 1 national tournament at Hutchinson (Kan). Sports Arena, March 20-25.
