Region I-5A tennis: Coronado boys doubles looks to future after injury-shortened match

It was tough to get Thomas Mann off the court.

If it were up to the Coronado sophomore, he would've continued, knowing a chance to make the state tournament still remained.

But his right knee, along with his parents and coaches, wouldn't allow it.

Mann reaggravated an injury during the third set of Tuesday's Region I-5A boys doubles third-place match at McLeod Tennis Center, causing the Mustangs to medically default. Argyle's Jackson Hill and Austin Lewis came away with a 5-7, 6-3, 2-0 retired win over Mann and Daniel Warraich to end Coronado's run.

At the time, the Mustangs knew a victory would put them in a playback against district rival Abilene Wylie for a state berth. But Coronado coach David Denham opted for the best long-term decision for the duo.

Mann suffered a Grade 1 ACL tear during the fall season and was cleared for tennis in January. He said he "tweaked" the same knee running after a ball in the first game of the third set.

"We don't need to go tear (his ACL) when you've got to go finish this match and then play a whole other match against a very solid Wylie team," Denham said. "We need to be 100% to be in that situation, and he's not. We got time. They're young."

After receiving medical attention, Mann walked with a noticeable limp as he and Warraich went to shake hands with their opponents. It was a difficult situation, but Mann acknowledged it was the right call.

"I never just want to quit, especially when you have so much opportunity," Mann said. "I wanted to keep playing through it, but I learned from my mistakes because I did that in the fall and it put me out two to three months. Did not want to have that happen again."

Denham hopes his players remember Tuesday's feeling and have a "chip on our shoulder." He also offered a remedy for next year: avoid the third-place match.

"Make it to the finals … so you only have to win one match (on the last day), instead of a playback," the junior Warraich said. " … Now that we know we can make it here and play at this level, we'll just learn from it and do better next time."

It was the first regional experience for both, and Mann said he's going to enjoy training for a return.

"(Retiring) can feel like it's a letdown or something, but you've always got to think about the future," Mann said. "We've got all of next fall and all of next spring. Me and Big D got some big things that are gonna happen in the future, so we're gonna prepare for those."
