Class 6 Region A

Oscar Smith 56, Kellam 7: Showing no ill effects from an eye-popping loss to close the regular season, Oscar Smith began its Class 6 state title defense with a first-round home victory.

On their first four touchdowns, the top-seeded Tigers needed just one play to score after gaining possession. Their fifth touchdown was a 71-yard punt return by Trey Jones.

Seeking its third consecutive state championship, Oscar Smith (10-1) will stay home next week for a rematch with rival Western Branch, which lost 2-0 to the Tigers late in the regular season. Oscar Smith then suffered a 56-0 loss to Phoebus, surrendering the 757Teamz poll’s top ranking for the first time all season.

Norview (4-7) also had a 91-yard touchdown called back in the fourth quarter because of a holding call. The third-seeded Warriors (8-3) will play No. 2 seed Nansemond River (7-3) in a region semifinal.
