Region’s sixth ATM burglary reported near Milligan

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — Elizabethton investigators are seeking leads after another ATM was burglarized early Friday morning, marking at least the sixth local ATM theft in recent months.

Officers responded just after 4 a.m. to the Carter County Bank at 1254 Milligan Highway where they found that an ATM had been burglarized.

According to the Elizabethton Police Department (EPD), an abandoned pickup was found in the parking lot of a business in the 1300 block of Milligan Highway. It was determined that the vehicle had been stolen from a business in the 2600 block of Elizabethton Highway and was used in the burglary.

Police said a chain attached to the truck, a 2000 model Dodge full-size pickup, was used to break into the ATM and an undetermined amount of cash was stolen.

“We need help from the public with this investigation,” the police department said in a release. “We kindly ask residents and business owners in the areas of the Elizabethton Highway, Milligan Highway, West Elk Avenue, Pinecrest, Central, King Springs, and Milligan College communities, including the areas near and in between to review your security cameras for suspicious activity and other vehicles from last night through early this morning.”

The police department said the truck arrived at the bank with the chain already attached.

“Area businesses and farms that use heavy chains should check inventory to determine if they have a heavy chain stolen during the overnight hours,” EPD said.

This is the latest in a string of ATM burglaries across the region in recent months.

Three ATMs in Johnson City were targeted between October and December. A Mosheim ATM was broken into in November, and three suspects reportedly made out with more than $84,000.

Last month, a skid steer was used to break into an ATM in Roan Mountain. A North Carolina man was arrested and charged about two weeks later, but the sheriff said he didn’t think the suspect was connected to the other local ATM burglaries.
