The Register-Guard staff takes 3 1st-place awards in Oregon Newspaper Publishers contest
The Register-Guard staff was recognized with three first place awards in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's 2023 Better Newspaper Contest for best special section or issue, best page one design and best sports photo for the largest newsrooms in the state.
The Register-Guard also was recognized in the group that includes The Oregonian, the Statesman Journal and the Bend Bulletin with three second-place awards. The entries for the awards that were presented Thursday evening in Gleneden Beach during the ONPA annual conference were judged by members of the Texas Press Association.
The Register-Guard's first place awards were for:
Best Special Section or Issue - Chris Pietsch, Chris Hansen and Adam Duvernay for Becoming Track Town, in advance of the World Athletics Championships meet held in summer 2022.
Best Page One Design
Best Sports Photo for Chris Pietsch's image of a steeplechaser creating a wall of water as he fell during the Oregon Relays.
Second place awards were presented for:
Best Photo Essay: Chris Pietsch
Best Sports Photo: Ben Lonergan
Best Overall Website: The Register-Guard
Register-Guard sports reporter Edith Noreiga was awarded first place for sports reporting for her story on the impact of a shortage of referees on high school sports while she was at the Statesman Journal.
