Registered nurse opens Beauty Bungalow spa in Logansport

Oct. 13—"Investing money on yourself is not a guilty pleasure, it's an investment in becoming the best version of you."

This is the motto of the Beauty Bungalow, a new spa in Logansport opened by registered nurse Teresa Schroder on Summit Avenue.

Schroder said she has been in the medical field for over 25 years, received her BSN from Indiana University and previously was a certified personal trainer. According to her website, after her two daughters moved out, she wanted to do something different with her nursing skills but also stay true to her passion of helping people become the best version of themselves.

"And I just became very burned out in the nursing profession and I've just kind of wanted to do something different and I've been thinking about getting into the aesthetic side of it for a couple years," Schroder said. "And my husband became sick a couple of years ago and he passed away last October and I needed to take like a mental vacation and during that time, I just decided to go ahead and go to Chicago and take the training to become an injector."

While in Chicago, she said she became a laser technician and an injector to learn how to do Botox injections, PDO threads, Kybella injections and sclerotherapy injections. Schroder said she also learned how to do laser tattoo removal and laser hair removal.

"... I learned how to do all kinds of stuff," Schroder said. "So, I just decided to open up my own spa."

To start the Beauty Bungalow, she said she had to go through a health department inspection due to her business being in a sunroom in her home. However, she said the inspection was easy due to her medical background.

"... I felt that was kind of easy for me [be]cause... I already knew a lot of the stuff [be]cause I've been managing health centers for about 15 years out my 25 year career as a RN. So, I knew a lot of the, like, OSHA standards and things like that," Schroder said. "Then I had to just go with the Board of Zoning, and there was already a business here previously, so I knew... that wouldn't be a problem. And I live right across from Eastgate and there's businesses over there, so I knew that even though this is a residential area that that wouldn't be a problem either."

Services at the Beauty Bungalow include microneedling, radiofrequency facials, teeth whitening, foot detox, body and butt contouring, laser liposuction, laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal, PDO threads, PRP hair restoration, Kybella injections, dermal fillers, Botox injections and vagacials, according to the Beauty Bungalow's website. Foot detox is also available, which includes a foot soak and paraffin wax that makes clients' feet soft, Schroder said. In addition, Schroder said she is the only certified laser tattoo removal and hair removal technician in the area with an FDA approved laser machine.

"One of the favorite [services] that I do is the microneedling pen with the PRP where I spin down your blood and get your platelet rich plasma," Schroder said. "That's... one of my favorites that I do. And then the lip fillers and the derma fillers and the Botox injections, those are my favorite[s] also."

In addition to herself, Schroder said she also has a medical director that oversees her. She said as an RN, she has to have someone to oversee her, and a doctor and friend she used to work with in Kokomo agreed to be her medical director. However, Schroder said she does not have to be onsite.

Schroder said she started the business this month and has just started taking clients, which she said she has had a couple of. Although she has started this business, Schroder said she is still working one day a week at a clinic in Delphi to keep up her nursing skills. She said she still tries to educate her clients on taking care of the body while performing services, such as providing skin care tips while giving a facial. Schroder said she hopes to become very busy with this business.

"Well, I was previously a certified personal trainer, so I've always been into health and nutrition and being very healthy and helping you just become the best version of you that you can possibly be," Schroder said. "And my saying of my spa is 'spending money on yourself is not a guilty pleasure, it's an investment in becoming the best version of you.' And I truly believe that..."
