Registration deadline for August special election is Monday

Voters took to the polls and grabbed their stickets in Guernesy County on Tuesday, March 19 for the primary election.

GUERNSEY COUNTY - The deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 8 special election is Monday. The Guernsey County Board of Elections will hold extended registration hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, to accommodate those wishing to register.

There is only one item on the ballot that voters will see across all 35 local precincts, and that is Issue 1, which, if passed, would change the rules for enacting new constitutional amendments. It would require 60% of voters to pass a new amendment (instead of a majority of 50% plus one), require citizens who want to place an amendment on the ballot to collect signatures from at least 5% of voters from the last gubernatorial election in all 88 counties (instead of the current 44), and eliminate a 10-day cure period that allows citizens to replace any signatures deemed faulty by the secretary of state's office.

If Issue 1 is approved by voters, the 60% threshold would take effect right away, and changes to signature gathering would be in place starting Jan. 1.

Regular hours for the Guernsey County Board of Elections, located on Wheeling Avenue, are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. However, early and absentee voting hours begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 11.
