'Regrettable' Dems have 'politicized' whistleblower: McConnell

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a floor speech Monday that he is disappointed that his colleague Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has chosen to politicize the recent whistleblower allegations. McConnell added that the specific subject matter is not known, but the matter should be handled in the Senate Intelligence Committee and not by leaks oto the media.

U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday called on Senate Republicans to issue a subpoena for a whistleblower complaint from an unidentified U.S. government official and demand a transcript of President Donald Trump's July 25 call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

"It is the Senate's duty - duty - to take this national security matter seriously and investigate now. Senate Republicans have the sole power and the overwhelming responsibility to see that it does," Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor.

Schumer said he made his request for a Senate investigation in a letter to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he discussed Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden and his son in a call with Ukraine's president.

Trump's statement to reporters about his July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky came as the Democratic leader of a key congressional panel said the pursuit of Trump's impeachment may be the "only remedy" to the situation.

Trump's call with Zelensky has been at the center of an escalating battle in Washington since Friday, when news outlets reported that Trump repeatedly asked the Ukrainian leader to investigate whether Biden, the Democratic front-runner to take on Trump in next year's election, misused his position when he was vice president.
