REI Co-op in Pearl District permanently closes after 20 years

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – So long, REI. It’s been an adventure.

The REI Co-op store in downtown Portland permanently closed Thursday after 20 years in the city. In a previous public statement, REI cited local break-ins for their decision to move away from the Pearl District location.

According to the company, the Portland store – located at 1405 Northwest Johnson Street – had its highest number of break-ins and thefts in two decades during 2023, despite actions to provide extra security.

On Jan. 25, the company announced its decision to cut 357 jobs nationwide by the end of the month. A letter to employers said the layoffs impacted “200 people at headquarters, 6 in [sales and customer service], 30 in Experiences and 121 in distribution centers.”

However, REI also recently announced a Beaverton location set to open in Spring 2024. It will be located at 2780 Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard at Walker Center, where a Bed Bath and Beyond closed its doors in 2023.

Until then, the closest locations to the downtown Portland store include the Tualatin store 12 miles away, the Hillsboro store 12 miles away and the Clackamas store 15 miles away.
