CHRISTOPHER CRAWFORD: The Angels called up Reid Detmers to make his MLB debut on Sunday against the Athletics. And they did so despite him having exactly one, count them, one start at the AAA level and being drafted with the 10th pick in the 2020 draft. Now, that start didn't go particularly well. He lasted just four and a third innings and he gave up six runs.

But there is still reason to be excited about Detmers in the 2021 season. The former Louisville star has one of the best curveballs of any young left hander you'll see. He can get his fastball into the mid 90s with a good amount of movement as well. Add in a usable change in slider, and you have the makings of a strong starter.

That kit amplifies, however, when you add in Detmers' ability to locate his pitches for strikes. And this is a pitcher that has not just plus control but plus command. Yes, there is definitely a difference.

Any young starter offers risk. And Detmers is a better real life prospect than a fantasy version. But with risk comes reward, if Detmers offers more reward than risk for the remainder of the 2021 season.
