STORY: "Unfortunately the case is pretty opaque, so I have to take it day by day. But we rely on President Biden's promise to our family that he's going to get Evan home. So we just have to put our faith in that. And we're doing all that we can on our end to keep the focus on Evan in the news," she told Reuters.

Earlier this month a Russian court dismissed a complaint against the extension of Gershkovich's pre-trial detention, more than six months after his arrest on spying charges which he denies. The decision essentially means that he will remain in detention. No date has been set for his trial.

Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was detained by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on March 29 in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage that carry up to 20 years in prison.

Gershkovich is the first American journalist to be detained on spy charges in Russia since the Cold War over three decades ago.
