Police in Boston discovered the remains of four infants this month when they were sent to an apartment, authorities announced Monday.

Officers responded to a radio call at around 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 17 to investigate an apartment in South Boston when they found what “appeared to be a human fetus or infant,” according to a news release from the Boston Police Department.

They returned the next day and discovered more remains, according to the news release.

The remains were collected by the medical examiner’s office, which conducted postmortem examinations and determined that the remains belonged to two male and two female infants.

Autopsy results were pending, and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office and the Boston Police Department were investigating, according to the release.

It was unclear whether any arrests had been made or whether the residence was occupied.
