Remember all the amor: Watch the trailer to the new Walter Mercado documentary

Our stars dimmed when we lost the great Walter Mercado last year. The beloved TV astrologist died in his native Puerto Rico at 87 in November 2019.

But now, we can feel mucho, mucho amor for the man of many capes once again. The new documentary about Mercado, called “Mucho Mucho Amor,” premieres on Netflix July 8, and the trailer for the film just dropped online.

Entertainment Weekly posted the exclusive trailer for the movie, made by filmmakers Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch. It features such fans as “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda enthusing over Mercado’s career and explaining his international appeal.

“He was one of the biggest characters. Not just on Spanish television, but anywhere,” Raul de Molina, host of Univision’s “El Gordo y La Flaca,” says in the trailer.

Another clip shows journalist Jorge Ramos ask Mercado, “Can I say how old you are?” Mercado howls, “Noooo!”

The film also drops hints about Mercado’s financial issues and his hiatus from public life. But it also features magnificent footage from his unforgettable entrance at the opening party for HistoryMiami’s 2019 exhibit “Mucho, Mucho Amor: 50 Years of Walter Mercado.” It’s an over-the-top moment that celebrates how many in Miami viewed him as royalty even as they eagerly awaited his recommended New Year’s Eve rituals each year (customized for each Zodiac sign). Mercado lived part time in Miami for almost 30 years, considering it his second home.

“Mucho, Mucho Amor” had been scheduled to close the Miami Film Festival in March, but the festival shut down before it could be shown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
