The Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem will be open Monday morning to allow the public to view its 9/11 memorial.

The academy, which is typically closed to the public, will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The memorial is in the lobby of the academy, located at 4190 Aumsville Highway.

The memorial pays tribute to the 3,000 people, including more than 400 law enforcement officers and firefighters, who died in the airplane attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania in 2001.

The academy’s display has several artifacts from the 9/11 attacks, including:

  • A floor beam from one of the World Trade Center buildings.

  • A section of the base of the North Tower.

  • A strap used to support mechanical systems in the towers.

  • A small floor beam from one of the higher floors of one of the Twin Towers.

  • A piece of aluminum from the exterior of a tower.

  • A piece of limestone from the outer wall of the Pentagon.

There also is a painting about the attacks and a video tribute to the victims and first responders.

“We will never forget the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on that tragic day in America’s history, as well as those who have succumbed to illness in the years since,” department director Phil Castle said.

The 210-acre academy in Salem is used for training police officers in Oregon.

The campus also has a memorial to fallen first responders from Oregon that lists 190 law enforcement officers and 170 firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
