Reminderville buys police car; seeks grants for park, bulletproof vests

REMINDERVILLE – City Council recently authorized the mayor to execute an agreement with Statewide Ford-Lincoln for the purchase of a 2023 Ford police utility interceptor.

The action was one of several approved by Council in the last month and a half. The vehicle will cost $56,372.

In other action, Council authorized OHM Advisors, which handles engineering duties for the city, to apply for an Ohio NatureWorks grant to enhance recreational facilities at Ray Williams Park.

The city is eligible to apply for a project costing up to $150,000, with reimbursement up to 75 percent of that cost.

Council also authorized Police Chief Marco Berquist to apply for a Patrick Leahy bulletproof vest partnership grant and accept the grant if awarded. The city is eligible to apply for a grant of $7,966 to help purchase the vests.

Council approved a number of employee hirings, including the following:

  • Dwayne Anderson, Alex Van Belleghem and Allison Kristal as summer camp counselors/front desk employees for the Reminderville Athletic Club at the rate of $9.53 per hour.

  • The following as personal trainers and fitness instructors for the RAC: Prentiss Suggs Sr., Brian White, Jeff Janzig, John Hornyak, Marina Rotenberg, Sarah Krakowski, Jonathan Burge, Stacey O’Keefe and Elizabeth Lear.

  • Aaron Jones as a full-time service department worker at the rate of $20 per hour.

  • Anthony Tomecko as a part-time firefighter/paramedic with the fire department at a rate of $23.06 per hour.

Other actions at the three recent meetings were:

  • Accepted the resignation of Bryan Huffman from the fire department effective May 24.

  • Accepted a Summit County ReWorks community recycling grant of $3,404 for 2022.

  • Adopted procurement and grant cash management policies to comply with federal regulations relating to expenditures of fiscal recovery funds provided through the American Rescue Plan Act.

  • Advanced $700,000 from the general fund to the road levy fund.

  • Authorized the mayor to sell a ditch mower and attachments to Twinsburg Township for $7,500.

  • OK’d the addition of $86,795 to the general fund, $18,000 to the street construction maintenance and repair fund and $34,904 to the tax budget, and deduct $50,000 from the permissive tax fund.

Heading to their next readings are amendments to Section 1351.04 of the codified ordinances entitled “standards” (dealing with fences) and Section 139.01 entitled “composition” of the police department.

The latter changes wording from “the department consist of more than nine full-time patrolmen and detectives” to it “shall consist of no more than 10 full-time patrolmen or detectives.” The number of part-time officers remains at five.

The next scheduled Council meeting is June 14.
