The remnants of Ian lingered off the Delmarva Peninsula to close out the weekend. With it, northeast winds brought coastal flooding and erosion. School closings continued into Monday.

On Tuesday, Ian may strengthen while remaining off the coast, but will move out to sea by mid-week, according to the Weather Channel.

Water levels began rising Sunday with coastal flooding expected Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Widespread rain and increasing winds remain in the forecast through Wednesday.

On Sunday, both Accomack County and the town of Chincoteague declared a Local State of Emergency due to anticipated coastal flooding. A voluntary evacuation was issued for Chincoteague Island, with residents in the Bunker Hill area and Ocean Breeze community strongly urged to evacuate.

Accomack County said an additional 2-4 inches of rain was expected, with gusts of up to 50 mph. Significant flooding on the seaside through Tuesday was expected. Virginia's State of Emergency remained in place.

The shelter at Arcadia High School, 8210 Lankford Highway in Oak Hall will open at 8 a.m. Monday. The town of Chincoteague said "citizens should rush to complete preparations for the storm and evacuate no later than 10 a.m. Monday."

Both Accomack and Northampton county public schools will be closed Monday due to possible flooding of roads, high winds, staff driving across bridge. In Accomack, 12-month employees should report on time.

Worcester County public schools will open two hours late Monday due to flood conditions. Holly Grove Christian and Worcester Preparatory schools are also on a two-hour delay.

Ocean City warned of repeated flooding during tidal cycles will occur in low lying areas through Tuesday. Rain will bring 1-4 inches over the next few days, and gusts could reach 50 mph.

On Saturday, a loader was rescue from the surf using other equipment in Ocean City, video posted to social media showed Saturday. Mats used for moving vehicles over the sand for Oceans Calling were washed into the sea.
