Remnants of tropical storm to impact NY's Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier: What to know

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for much of Central New York and the Southern Tier, as what's left of tropical storm Nicole pushes up through the Appalachians to bring rainstorms, meteorologists say.

Showers are expected to start Friday afternoon in the region, with possible thunderstorms and localized flooding, according to Michael Murphy, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Binghamton. But the predicted forecast is slightly weaker than what was predicted earlier this week, he said. The total rainfall is predicted to be between 1.5 to 2.5 inches with winds of only 10 to 12 miles per hour, and the storm is expected to clear out by 7 or 8 a.m. Saturday.

"The storm's moving so fast now, it's really going to be less than a 24-hour period of rain," he said, later adding, "By the time it gets here it’s just going to be transitioning to a normal, low-pressure system."

Even with possible isolated flash flooding, river levels are expected to remain below the flood plain, Murphy said. However, he noted meteorologists would keep an eye out for flooding and severe thunderstorms.

Snow in the forecast for Utica, Syracuse area

Following the storm, temperatures are expected to drop after a period of unusually warm weather. One to two inches of lake effect snow is expected around Syracuse, Rome and Utica on Sunday night into Monday as overnight lows reach the 20s, Murphy said. Only a few flurries are predicted for the Southern Tier.

Another system could bring more snow and rain this coming Tuesday and Wednesday as well, Murphy noted.

"We're finally getting back to normal weather," he said, noting the recent high temperatures. "It's been 10 to 12 degrees above normal."
