Renaming ceremony for Fort Gordon scheduled for October

Editor's note: This story previously reported that the ceremony will be open to the public based on outdated information provided to The Chronicle. New information issued by Fort Gordon officials notes that the ceremony will strictly be for military personnel and invited guests.

Fort Gordon has an official date for the renaming ceremony to Fort Eisenhower — Oct. 27.

The ceremony to rename the base after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower will be live streamed on the Cyber Center of Excellence's social media, and those with military ID's or invited guests can attend in person.

“Rising from second lieutenant to commander-in-chief, Eisenhower’s extensive, innovative, and effective military experience and leadership shaped our modern world,” Maj. Gen. Paul Stanton, commanding general for Fort Gordon and the Cyber Center, was quoted as saying in a news release. “His dedication to ensuring equal rights for soldiers and citizens alike continues to be an example and inspiration for the present and future soldiers of the Army he so faithfully served and decisively led."

The announcement from the fort last week also came with an update on the new logo for the Cyber Center of Excellence to go with the new name. In the spring, the Cyber Center launched a competition for the new logo and now it has been finalized. The winner was Sgt. 1st Class Jason Spencer, who formerly served at the Cyber Center and is now an artist for the Army at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.

The new name for the fort was approved last fall on the recommendation of a Congressional commission tasked with identifying military assets that commemorate the Confederacy or those who served in the Confederacy and suggesting new names.
