WORCESTER – Renovation work continues at Pleasant Tower, where three years ago a portion of the façade suddenly crumbled to a nearby sidewalk, leaving a patch of exposed blocks near the windows on its fifth floor.

The December 2019 incident in which no injuries were reported, prompted a general inspection by Worcester Housing Authority, which found major potential hazards to the residents.

About a year later, the Housing Authority and Housing and Urban Development funded a $6.4 million renovation of the building.

Work started in 2021 to install new windows, a new exterior façade and a new roof.

Housing Authority CEO Alex Corrales said this week that the new façade and windows provide energy efficiency keeping the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Construction is expected to be completed by early November, according to Corrales.

At 275 Pleasant St. the building provides affordable housing with studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.
