Pavlenko volunteered to defend his homeland since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“The war takes away our loved ones! The war took Andrew Pavlenko. I will announce the day of farewell to Andrew later. P.S. I will miss you very much, my beloved…”

"One of the brightest stars of the Black Square Theater, Andrew Pavlenko, died yesterday," Andrew’s friend and former theatre colleague Oleksiy Arestovych wrote on Facebook.

“He volunteered from the first day of the war. He was wounded, concussed three times, treated for a long time, and his health failed. He was also my eldest daughter's godfather. So many years shoulder to shoulder on the same stage. We are more than a family. It's like a piece was torn out of my life.”

In addition to acting in the theater, Andrew Pavlenko starred in films such as The Women's Doctor, The Waiting List, Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno, Tales of Chapai, Werewolf in Uniform, Photos for Documents, Sasha, and 1941.

His friends and stage colleagues share their fond memories of Andrew Pavlenko.

"Dear friends... yesterday Andrew Pavlenko passed away," wrote his friend and fellow actor Oles Katsion.

“A friend, a talented actor, a documentary filmmaker, a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a loving father, and a true patriot of Ukraine. This is a terrible shock for everyone who knew him.”

He also shared the last poem Pavlenko wrote.

"Farewell, my comic pirate, rare bird, slippery cockatoo, rhino leader! Rest in peace," wrote Ukrainian actress Anna Kuzina.

Last week, Vasyl Kukharskyi, a Ukrainian actor who played the lead role in the movie Maksym Osa and acted in Kyiv’s popular Theater on Podil, died of wounds received at the front.
