Rent an electric tricycle for free with a Sacramento library card. Here’s how it works

Books, board games, video games and movies aren’t the only things you can take home from the library.

Residents ages 18 and up with a Sacramento library card in “good standing” can rent an electrical tricycle free of charge for up to three weeks through the city of Sacramento’s newest pilot lending program. Colonial Heights Library on Stockton Boulevard partnered with the city to bring the community an alternative mode of transportation that’s also sustainable, said city sustainability analyst Rachel Patten in a statement.

The program launched on Aug. 3, with funding from a California Energy Commission grant.

Reservations will not be accepted.

There are five three-wheeled electrical tricycles with attached cargo baskets. According to the statement, the city may expand with more vehicles and additional lending programs across Sacramento libraries.

The electric tricycles are ideal for shorter distances, according to Sacramento Public Library, with a typical range of up to 30 miles.

When you check out a tricycle at the service desk inside Colonial Heights Library; you’ll also walk away with keys, a lock, a battery, a charger and a cover for weather protection.

The vehicle should be returned to the same place you checked it out, along with all of its equipment.

The Sacramento Public Library has information on how to charge, operate and lock electric tricycles. If you don’t have a library card, the process starts online.
