At least one GOP lawmaker will be absent from crucial meetings in the House speaker crisis Wednesday to help with a more pressing crisis − helping Americans evacuate war-torn Israel.
Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills, an Army combat veteran, flew to the country overnight and has rescued 32 Americans, but he told The Floridian there are "hundreds trapped" in Israel.

He previously helped American families leave Afghanistan in September 2021.
USA TODAY has reached out to Mills for comment on his trip to Israel.
"My friend, Florida Representative Cory Mills, is currently on the ground in Israel, helping to evacuate American citizens who are trapped in Israel," Rep. Mayra Flores, R-Texas, said on X, formerly Twitter. "May God keep them safe as they continue their rescue efforts!"
Mills told The Floridian he felt compelled after Hamas attacked Israel and is "helping and showing solidarity with our Israeli brethren and helping Americans evacuate."
The U.S. Department of State said Wednesday 22 Americans have died since the attacks began Saturday. More than 20 are missing.
At least 1,200 Israelis have died since this weekend and thousands are wounded.
