Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Friday called the earthquake that rattled the New York metro area a divine punishment for America and a “strong sign to repent.”

The Christian conservative lawmaker from rural Georgia suggested the tremor, as well as the total eclipse of the sun that will be seen in parts of the U.S. on Monday, are both signs that God is not happy with us.

“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come,” Greene tweeted. “I pray that our country listens.”

Greene, a two-term incumbent who represents a heavily Republican district, did not say what she believes may have triggered the quake centered in suburban New Jersey or what anyone might do to prevent future disasters.

Science says both earthquakes and eclipses are naturally occurring phenomena.

But some evangelical Christians believe they can be a sure sign of a coming Armageddon.
