Skyler Henry reports Greenberg pleaded guilty to several federal charges today including sex trafficking a minor as part of a cooperation agreement.
- And this just in a close associate of Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz pleaded guilty today to several federal charges, including sex trafficking a minor, but the Republican lawmaker who is facing his own federal investigation insists Greenberg's plea deal has nothing to do with him. CBS 4's Skyler Henry has the latest from Capitol Hill.
SKYLER HENRY: Inside a federal courthouse in Florida, an associate who Congressman Matt Gaetz has called his wingman pled guilty to six federal charges, including child sex trafficking, and wire fraud. According to his plea agreement, Joel Greenberg, a former Seminole County tax collector, admits being involved in sugar daddy relationships where he paid women for sex, including a minor that he introduced to other adult men who engaged in commercial sex acts.
Multiple sources told CBS News one of those men was Congressman Gaetz, who is facing a Justice Department investigation looking into whether he had a sexual relationship when the girl was 17, something gates has repeatedly denied.
BRIAN BEUTE: I want to see all crime, all corruption rooted.
Brian Beute was a former political opponent of Greenberg who helped trigger the investigation.
DAVID BEAR: I am completely confident that Joel is providing federal assistance for very important players throughout the community who are committing crimes, thought they could get away with it, because they're powerful and wealthy, and hopefully now they won't.
SKYLER HENRY: The Florida Congressman has not been indicted and a spokesperson noted Mr Gaetz was not named nor referenced in Mr Greenberg's plea. Gaetz seems undaunted by the scandal, he rallied last week with fellow Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, and addressed in Ohio political summit this weekend, where he reportedly told the crowd he is being falsely accused.
