WASHINGTON — Rep. Patrick McHenry, whose district includes parts of Gaston County, was appointed speaker pro tempore of the House after Kevin McCarthy's stunning ouster on Tuesday.

McHenry, a Gaston County native, is one of McCarthy's closest allies. The speaker pro tempore has far more limited powers compared to a speaker of the House, but he will preside over the lower chamber until a new speaker is elected.McHenry won his 10th term in Congress in Nov. 22, 2022.

A graduate of Ashbrook High and Belmont Abbey College, he represents about a quarter of Gaston County, including Bessemer City and Cherryville, and all of Cleveland County. The district also includes all of Alexander, Burke, Catawba, Iredell and Lincoln counties, and parts of Caldwell and Rutherford counties.
