Local Congressman Raul Ruiz has been appointed to serve as the Ranking Member of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries made the announcement on Tuesday.

Ruiz said in a statement he was "honored" to be selected to serve on the subcommittee, especially given his medical background.

“As a physician and public health expert, I will take an equity-based and patient-centered approach to put people above politics and identify common-sense solutions that will protect our nation’s health," Ruiz said.

Spokesperson Kelly O'Keeffe said the congressman will "lead the Democrats' agenda and priorities" as the ranking member of the subcommittee, and his main focus will be looking at lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

No information is currently available on the hearing schedule and other committee events.

Jeffries also appointed Democratic Reps. Debbie Dingell, Kweisi Mfume, Deborah Ross and Robert Garcia to the subcommittee.

Ohio Republican Congressman Brad Wenstrup will serve as the chairman. Other Republican committee members include Reps. Nicole Malliotakis, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Debbie Lesko, Michael Cloud, John Joyce, Ronny Jackson, Marjorie Taylor Green and Rich McCormick.
