Southern Michigan's representative in Congress visited Egypt late last year, where he attended a climate-focused conference as part of a conservative group.

Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, joined members of the Conservative Climate Caucus, which included Reps. John Curtis of Utah, Greg Murphy of North Carolina, Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, and Debbie Lesko of Arizona, at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, called COP27, in November. The event took place in Sharm El-Sheikh, and the trip was privately sponsored by the Conservative Climate Foundation.

During his visit, Walberg met with U.S. negotiators and leaders at the COP27 Blue and Green Zones – areas where thought leaders can meet and discuss ideas about sustainability and other environmental concerns. He also met with senior officials from Egypt, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, the European Union and the United Kingsom, among others.

Walberg and other caucus members touted the need to unlock and develop resources in the United States to ensure that emission-reduction policies can promote clean energy without sacrificing quality of life for American citizens.

Walberg spoke at and attended numerous roundtable discussions about advancing conservative clean-energy policies. He said that he supports a solutions-oriented, market-driven approach to addressing energy needs.

“The story of American innovation is one we need to tell as we move forward on policies to reduce emissions while ensuring a strong economy and protecting freedoms,” he said. “My involvement with the Conservative Climate Caucus is predicated on the fact that conservatives need a seat at the table.”

The trip was approved by the House Ethics Committee. According to travel disclosure forms filed with the clerk of the House of Representatives by Rich Powell of the Conservative Climate Foundation, the cost for Walberg's travel included $6,180.25 for round-trip airfare, $111.54 for ground transportation, $3,400 for lodging at the Coral Sea Imperial-Sensatori resort and $964.08 for meals on the trip, which was from Nov. 9-14.
