Repeat offender charged with vehicular assault after DUI incident that sent two to the hospital

Prosecutors charged a Tacoma woman suspected of drunken driving with vehicular assault following a three-car wreck Tuesday on Wheaton Way in Bremerton that sent the two other drivers to the hospital, one with a serious head injury.

Machiah Danielle Rivera, 23, was charged Friday in Kitsap County Superior Court with vehicular assault and second-degree driving with a suspended license. Court records say she was arrested for drunken driving in January 2020 and February 2018.

Court records from Mason County Superior Court say Rivera is awaiting trial on felonies related to a drunken-driving arrest where she was also accused of two counts of third-degree assault.

Rivera was driving north on Wheaton Way when she struck a man driving southbound and turning onto Sheridan Road. Rivera's vehicle then spun into another driver, according to court documents.

The person Rivera allegedly struck sustained a brain bleed, a semi-collapsed lung, a fractured pelvic bone and a fractured ankle, according to court documents.

A breath test conducted by Bremerton police found Rivera had a blood-alcohol content between 0.127 and 0.14. The Washington state limit is 0.08.

On Friday, Rivera pleaded not guilty to the charges and her bail was set at $150,000.
