Report of an active shooter at GE Appliances facility in Louisville was a false alarm, police say

Reports of an active shooter at the GE Appliance Park in Louisville on Thursday were a false alarm, the Louisville Metro Police Department said in a post to X Thursday.

Shortly before noon Thursday, LMPD said on X (formerly Twitter) it had received calls for service at GE Appliance Park. They did not say what the calls were in reference to, but the company later confirmed it was a false report of an active shooter.

Various social media posts to X and Facebook referenced the reports of an active shooter before LMPD confirmed it was a false call. LMPD said an employee confused an equipment alarm with the facility’s “Active Aggressor Alarm,” according to a statement released Thursday afternoon.

“At 11:15 a.m., the GE Appliances security team received a call from the local emergency management system of a potential active shooter at Appliance Park. It has been confirmed there was no active shooter,” GE Appliances said in a statement. “An employee confused an equipment alarm in the building. Following EMS notification, security activated the active aggressor alarms and texted employees out of an abundance of caution. There is no threat, and employees are back to work.”

Officers responded to the scene, found no active threat, and gave the all clear.

“The 911 call that was made was not a malicious call, but a misunderstanding of what was happening,” LMPD said.

GE Appliance Park has been the longtime home of GE Appliances, and is the main manufacturing facility for washers, dryers, refrigerators and other appliances. It has been in Louisville for 70 years, is more than 1,000 acres and is located at 4000 Buechel Bank Road.

LMPD said officers were still at the scene just before noon.
