Report: Alabama football assistant finalist for Troy head coaching vacancy

Alabama football assistant defensive coordinator Charles Kelly is a finalist for the head coaching vacancy at Troy according to a report from Footballscoop.com, which cited unnamed "sources with direct knowledge."

Also named as finalists in the report were Kentucky co-defensive coordinator Jon Sumrall and West Virginia defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley. The report said there is another unidentified finalist.

Footballscoop.com reported that all four were expected to meet with Troy athletics director Brent Jones on Thursday.

After three years, Troy fired coach Chip Lindsey, who posted a 15-19 record without going to a bowl game.

Kelly has been a part of Nick Saban's staff at Alabama since 2019 and has served as safeties coach and assistant defensive coordinator since his arrival. Kelly has coached NFL standouts such as Patrick Surtain II and Trevon Diggs and was a part of the Crimson Tide's 2020 national championship staff.

Sumrall was promoted to co-defensive coordinator this season at Kentucky and has been on the staff as linebackers coach since 2019. Sumrall was a part of the Troy staff from 2014-18 as linebackers coach.

Lesley has been on West Virginia's staff for the past three years and was promoted to defensive coordinator last year. Lesley helped the Mountaineers' defense rank fourth in total defense in 2020 (291.4 yards per game) and was an defensive assistant coach at Troy from 2016-18.
