Report: Bears are ‘open for business’ in trading out of No. 9 pick in NFL draft
The Chicago Bears were the focal point of the offseason when they had the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft that everyone knew they were going to trade.
After trading the top selection to the Carolina Panthers for two first-round picks, two second-round selections and wide receiver DJ Moore ahead of free agency, general manager Ryan Poles has positioned his team for success.
The Bears still have a top-10 pick in the draft, as they sit at No. 9, where they could land a top prospect that will hopefully be a building block for this team for years to come. But could there be a scenario where Poles considers trading back again?
According to ESPN 1000’s David Kaplan, there’s chatter coming out of the NFL owners meetings this week where it sounds like Chicago would be open to trading back again to acquire even more draft picks.
“A lot of smoke out of the owners meetings that the Bears are absolutely open for business trading pick 9 to move back a handful of slots, still get a good player and add more draft capital,” Kaplan said.
It likely depends on how the board shakes out. With a number of quarterback-needy teams inside the top 10 — or looking to trade up — it could set up a scenario where a top prospect — or blue player, as Poles describes it — to fall to them at No. 9.
But if that’s not the case, Poles could use this as an opportunity to trade back, within reason a few spots, land additional draft picks and get a good player.
