Browns defensive line coach Chris Kiffin joining Ole Miss coaching staff

At least one more Browns defensive coach is headed for the college ranks.

Browns defensive line coach Chris Kiffin is joining the Ole Miss coaching staff, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday, confirming reports by Sports Illustrated and The Athletic.

Kiffin is expected hold the title of co-defensive coordinator and run the Rebels' defense along with current defensive coordinator Chris Partridge. Kiffin's brother, Lane Kiffin, is Ole Miss' head coach.

Kiffin has other ties to Ole Miss, having worked under Hugh Freeze. Kiffin left for Florida Atlantic in 2017 and then the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL in 2018. The Browns hired Kiffin in February of 2020 as their defensive line coach under Kevin Stefanski.

A few days ago, Browns assistant defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett left for Liberty University. Kiffin and Garrett had worked together on the Browns' coaching staff for two seasons.

Stefanski said Monday he didn't expect any major changes to his coaching staff, but Kiffin's departure has Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods seeking a new assistant to oversee a line led by All-Pro end Myles Garrett.

The Browns announced they signed conerback Herb Miller to a reserve/futures contract. Miller appeared in nine games during the 2021 season. He finished the season on the Browns’ practice squad.
