A member of the New England Patriots coaching staff could be wearing a different shade of blue next season.

According to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers have requested permission from the Patriots to interview assistant coach Jerod Mayor for Carolina’s head coaching job.

The Panthers are the second team to request to meet with the former linebacker-turned-linebacker-coach since the end of the regular season. The Cleveland Browns reached out to New England to interview Mayo for their defensive coordinator title earlier this week.

This will be the third straight year Mayo has taken an interview to become a head coach. In 2021, he interviewed with the Eagles for their head coaching job before doing the same with the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders the following year.

Mayo, who played the entirety of his NFL career with New England, has been adamant in his desire to become an NFL coach.

“That’s never changed. I think I’m ready to be a head coach in the league,” Mayo said in December. “Right now, my focus is on being here with the Patriots, but that’s definitely my goal.”

Despite injuries forcing Mayo to hang up the cleats and shoulder pads early, he returned to New England in 2019 as the team’s inside linebacker coach. Although Mayo has taken up several duties of a defensive coordinator, he has yet to be elevated beyond his positional coach title.

The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule in October.
