Report: Chiefs waive former XFL QB Jordan Ta’amu

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived a popular free agent signing who was part of the recent XFL reboot.

According to Kansas City Star reporter Herbie Teope, the Chiefs have waived former St. Louis BattleHawks QB Jordan Ta’amu. Teope also reports that the team plans to bring him back on the practice squad assuming he clears waivers.

Ta’amu’s fate with the Chiefs was basically sealed as soon as the team re-signed backup QB Matt Moore. He had a real shot to make the 53-man roster with three quarterbacks on the roster, but as soon as that signing happened in Kansas City, his chances to make the team dramatically decreased.

Ta’amu was a standout player in the XFL, recording the top completion percentage in the league at 72% while also recording third-most passing yards with 1,050. He threw five touchdowns and two interceptions in five games played with St. Louis. He also had the most rushing yards of any quarterback with 41 carries for 217 yards and a touchdown.

This shouldn’t be considered bad new for the XFL standout, though. By most accounts, he had a rough training camp, but he has some skills worth developing. He’s the perfect option for a scout team quarterback given his athleticism and rushing ability. He can mimic a number of quarterbacks the Chiefs will face early in the season, such as Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson.
