Report: Edgewater man shot to death by police after pulling a gun on them

A 62-year-old "distraught suicidal male" was shot to death Friday by two Edgewater police officers when he pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at them, according to the police department.

Officers responded to the 400 block of North Riverside Drive where the homeowner and another person reported the man. He was identified as Mark Wadsworth, 62, and didn't live there but was known to the homeowner, according to a release.

Two Edgewater officers arrived and began to speak with Wadsworth in the rear yard. After a brief conversation, Wadsworth "quickly pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it toward the two officers."

"The two officers fired multiple shots to protect themselves ultimately incapacitating him. The officers then rendered aid; however, he was pronounced deceased on scene," the release said.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

"EPD is thankful the officers were unharmed and we give our condolences to the family of the deceased," police said in the release.
