Report: Fanbo Zeng to decommit from Gonzaga and join G League Ignite

Fanbo Zeng, who is considered to be the top Chinese prospect, will reportedly decommit from Gonzaga to sign with the NBA G League Ignite for the 2021-22 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Zeng, a four-star recruit out of Windermere Prep in Central Florida, initially committed to Gonzaga but the departure of assistant coach Tommy Lloyd to Arizona played a role in his decision to sign with the Ignite. Zeng will now be draft-eligible in 2022.

The 6-foot-10 forward will have the opportunity to further develop his game with the Ignite. Zeng has been highly touted as a passer and shooter at his size, but he will need to add muscle to handle the physicality at the next level.

The news of Zeng joining the Ignite comes one day after five-star prospect Michael Foster Jr. agreed to join the program. The two players are the first to join the team ahead of next season. Others are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

Coached by Brian Shaw, the Ignite completed their inaugural season in March after qualifying for the playoffs with an 8-8 record. Led by Jalen Green, the Ignite featured high-profile prospects Jonathan Kuminga, Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix.

The stated goal of the Ignite is to provide development opportunities for those prospects looking to play professionally. The season gave the players a platform to showcase their skills in front of a nationally televised audience, and scouts and executives on hand.
