Report: Former Memphis QB Grant Gunnell commits to North Texas

Former Memphis quarterback Grant Gunnell has a new home as he's committed to North Texas, according to multiple reports.

ESPN was first to report Gunnell's decision. The junior, who has three years of eligibility remaining, transferred after the Memphis spring practice. He transferred to Memphis from Arizona in December 2020 but didn't play last season after surgery for a right leg injury.

Gunnell showed no signs of being hindered in spring practice while competing with returning starter Seth Henigan. Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said he was pleased with how both looked during spring practice but expected the battle to continue through preseason camp.

Gunnell returns to his native Texas, where he's still the state's all-time leader in passing yards for high school quarterbacks.

There's also a chance he could return to Memphis this season. North Texas faces Memphis at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Sept. 24. If both Gunnell and Henigan are healthy, both will likely be the starting quarterbacks on opposite sidelines.
