Report: Former Suns star Amar’e Stoudemire accused of punching his daughter

Former Phoenix Suns star Amar’e Stoudemire was arrested early Sunday on a domestic violence charge in an incident with one of his daughters, according to several media reports, and just hours after he received an MBA degree from the University of Miami.

Stoudemire's Miami-Dade Corrections' online entry says Stoudemire, 40, was arrested at his Brickell Key condominium in Miami on one count of misdemeanor battery, the Miami Herald reported. The newspaper said the alleged victim, according to an arrest report, was one of Stoudemire’s two daughters, but didn't specify whether which one. The report says the child told police that the 6-foot-10, 255-pound Stoudemire punched her in the jaw and slapped her hard enough to draw blood.

Stoudemire’s bond was set at $1,500. An arraignment hearing was set for Jan. 17.

According to the Herald's report, the arrest document said Stoudemire told police the child had called her mother, Stoudemire's ex-wife Alexis, to pick her up “because she was sad” and she “was sad because she received a whooping from him for being disrespectful and a liar.”

“I observed blood stains on the victim’s sweater and sweatpants,” the arrest report states. “The mother of the victim showed me the photo she received from her daughter, which shows the victim crying and blood running down her face.”

Stoudemire was drafted by the Suns in 2002 and was the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2002-03 season, his first of eight with Phoenix. He was traded in 2010 to the New York Knicks, with whom he played five years. He finished his career, which included five All-NBA selections, with the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.
