Report: Giants don’t want to use franchise tag on Daniel Jones

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters during Senior Bowl week that contract negotiations with running back Saquon Barkley had begun. He also noted that representatives for quarterback Daniel Jones have not yet been contacted.
Despite that, Schoen reiterated his stance that the Giants would like Jones back and would like him back on a long-term deal.
“We haven’t had those (discussions) yet but we would like to have Daniel Jones back,” Schoen said during his year-end press conference. “We’re happy Daniel is going to be here.”
When the Giants do eventually reach out to Jones and his reps, they hope to get a deal done in relatively short order. In the event that doesn’t happen, they could use the franchise tag as a fail-safe.
However, Jeff How of The Athletic reports that Schoen & Co. would very much like to avoid using said tag on Jones.
The Seahawks and Giants remain committed to keeping quarterbacks Geno Smith and Daniel Jones. The preference in each case, unsurprisingly, is to reach an extension that will keep all sides happy rather than use the franchise tag. It’s still too early to know how either deal will play out.
Under the franchise tag, Jones would be given a guaranteed salary of $32.41 million. Obviously, the Giants would like that first-year number to be a bit lower even in the event DJ ends up earning between $30-$40 million annually, which some have projected.
