Matt Ryan, who spent 14 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before spending the past year with the Indianapolis Colts, is looking at becoming a broadcaster.

According to a New York Post report, Ryan, who could still play next season, is "very interested" in a career in broadcasting if he decides to retire. Ryan, 37, would follow in the steps of fellow quarterbacks Tom Brady and Tony Romo if he decided to take up a career in the broadcast booth.

In January, Ryan said he is open to playing in 2023.

“I still love playing,” Ryan said. “Obviously, I’m not committed to anything here, wherever. I’ve got to see how it shakes out. But I still love playing. Honestly, I still feel like there’s a lot of good football left in my body.”

How much are the Colts paying Matt Ryan in 2023?

If the 2015 NFL MVP plays the whole season, he'll make $29,205,882. Here is how the contract breaks down, according to data from spotrac.com and overthecap.com:

  • $12 million is guaranteed.

  • There's a $7.5 million roster bonus that becomes guaranteed on March 17, 2023.

  • An additional $7,205,882 of his salary guarantees on March 17, 2023.

  • An additional $2.5 million is paid throughout the season.

If he were to retire, Ryan would lose out on the entire $29 million salary for the upcoming season. However, it is likely the Colts will release him prior to March 17, saving $17 million and giving Ryan $12 million to seek out a broadcasting gig.

What does it cost the Colts to release Matt Ryan?

If the Colts release Ryan after the season, he'll cost $18 million against the 2023 salary cap. That's a significant dead cap hit but it will save $17,205,882 under the salary cap. If they trade him, it's a $6 million dead cap hit and a savings of $29,205,882.

Ryan is an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season.
