A major potential threat to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s re-election is gone, with word that Ivanka Trump won’t challenge him in the 2022 Republican primary.

Former President Donald Trump’s daughter told Rubio of her decision a few weeks ago, the New York Times reported. The article, by Maggie Haberman, cites a “person close to Ms. Trump.”

Last month, another prominent Trumpworld figure, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Panhandle Republican, said he wouldn’t challenge Rubio in next year’s primary.

Rubio, in his second term and the state’s senior senator, has had a mixed relationship with the former president. Both men sought the 2016 Republican presidential nomination and criticized each other harshly during the campaign. After Trump emerged as the victor — he overwhelmingly defeated Rubio in the Florida presidential primary — the two reached a détente, which involved Rubio supporting just about everything Trump has said and done.

But some Florida Trump supporters have remained suspicious of Rubio, thinking he hasn’t been as pro-Trump as they would have liked.
