Report: Leon County unemployment shows slight increase as these job sectors surge

More Leon County residents were unemployed in June compared to the previous month but less than the same time a year ago, according to the state's latest employment report.

There were 4,863 unemployed residents in Leon County, representing a 3.1% unemployment rate. In May, Leon County had a 2.5% unemployment rate.

At 3.1%, the unemployment rate for the capital region, including Gadsden and Wakulla counties, mirrored Leon County.

The region's June 2022 unemployment rate was 0.2 percentage points lower than the state's 2.9% unemployment rate.

Reports also show nonagricultural employment in the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area was 186,300, an increase of 5,500 jobs (+3%) over the year.

According to CareerSource Capital Region, some of the top advertised positions for the Tallahassee MSA include registered nurses, software developers, applications managers and retail supervisors.

Tallahassee area industries with job gains in June:

  • Leisure and hospitality (+11.7%)

  • Financial activities (+7.7%)

  • Education and health services (+2.8%) industries grew faster than statewide over the year.

  • Tallahassee MSA had the second fastest annual job growth rate compared to all metro areas in the state in financial activities (+7.7%).

  • Industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+2,100 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,400); professional and business services (+1,000 jobs); education and health services (+700 jobs); other services (+700 jobs); financial activities (+600 jobs); manufacturing (+100 jobs); and information (+100 jobs).

Industries that lost jobs over the year:

  • Mining, logging and construction (-300)

  • Government (-900)
