Report: Logan Ryan open to Giants return but wants to test free agency

Veteran safety Logan Ryan told reporters earlier this week that he hasn’t given much thought to what happens after the season. For now, he’s strictly focused on winning and playing out his one-year, $5.05 million contract with the New York Giants.

“Definitely. I’m Jersey made, it’s been a blessing for me to be here,” Ryan said when asked if he could see himself sticking around East Rutherford. “Free agency, the question is going to come up time and time again, but we don’t even know the salary cap for next year. I have 30-something days left in this regular season.”

Behind-the-scenes, Ryan has pondered the entire situation.

Zack Rosenblatt of NJ Advance Media reports that while Ryan is open to remaining with the Giants in 2021 and beyond, any final decision will only come after he’s once against tested the free agent waters.

Multiple people familiar with Ryan’s thinking told NJ Advance Media, speaking on the condition of anonymity, that he’d be open to re-signing with the Giants in 2021 … though only after exploring free agency first. Ryan and those close to him don’t feel like he got a fair shake in 2020 due to the nature of the NFL’s strange, coronavirus-impacted offseason.

Ryan believes he’s one of the NFL’s best defensive backs and both he and his representation made that abundantly clear this past offseason. They sought in excess of $10 million annually and rejected several offers prior to signing with the Giants.

Currently, Ryan leads all NFC free safeties in Pro Bowl voting and the argument could be made that he’s playing at an All-Pro level. His presence has certainly had a positive impact on the Giants both on and off the field, and losing him in free agency would be a tremendous hit for Big Blue.

Even with Jabrill Peppers, Xavier McKinney and Julian Love in tow, general manager Dave Gettleman & Co. are going to want to break out their wallets and do everything humanly possible to keep Ryan in town.
