Report: Mets shopping RHP Wheeler

The New York Mets have started trade conversations with the Boston Red Sox revolving around right-hander Zack Wheeler, the New York Post reported Monday.

According to the report, the two teams are very early in discussions, but the Mets are also talking with other teams about the right-handed pitcher.

This season, Wheeler is 6-6 in 19 starts with a 4.69 ERA and 1.277 WHIP.

Wheeler, 29, can be a free agent following the season. He was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants with the No. 6 overall pick in 2009, but was traded at the 2011 MLB Trade Deadline to the Mets for Carlos Beltran.

He missed the entirety of the 2015 and 2016 seasons due to injury.

New York is 40-50 on the season, 13.5 games behind the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves and 7.0 games back of the second wild-card spot.
